Dear Supervisor Dorsey,
I am writing to you regarding urgent safety concerns at the intersection of 12th and Mission Street in District 6.
This intersection shows more reported harm than 99 percent of San Francisco intersections, earning it a grade F on the Danger Index. No exposure normalization: the index ranks reported harm, not risk per crossing. City records document 51 injury collisions within 150 meters of this intersection in the last five years. The Danger Index grade is computed over a tighter 80-meter core, so these figures are measured over different areas and should not be expected to reconcile.
In the last three years, there have been 151 street-condition 311 reports concerning defects, sidewalks, curbs, signs, streetlights, and blocked sidewalks. While no recent press coverage was found, documented coverage of safety problems at this intersection goes back at least 12 years, to 2014.
An automated visual audit flagged a vehicle turning conflict zone in a Street View photograph, and city records corroborate this with 5 pedestrian crossing collisions in 5 years. City records also show 3 street-condition 311 reports in 12 months and 5 pedestrian crossing collisions in 5 years relating to faded or sub-standard crosswalk markings. Furthermore, city records indicate 6 street-condition 311 reports in 12 months for inadequate street lighting, and 4 street-condition 311 reports in 12 months concerning curb or sidewalk in poor condition. The visual audit did not find these conditions in the photograph.
I urge you to support funding for Continental crosswalks, corner daylighting, and a leading pedestrian interval at this location. An estimated $250,000 to $350,000 could be secured through the Caltrans Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
Sincerely,
A resident of District 6
