Dear Supervisor Dorsey,
I am writing as a District 6 resident about the urgent safety needs at 7th and Charles J Brenham.
City records document 81 injury collisions within 150 meters of this intersection in the last five years. This figure covers a 150-meter radius, while the Danger Index grade is computed over a tighter 80-meter core, so these figures are measured over different areas. This intersection shows more reported harm than 99 percent of San Francisco intersections, earning a grade F on the Danger Index. Note that this index ranks reported harm, not risk per crossing, without exposure normalization.
There are 1079 street-condition 311 reports at this location in the last three years, covering street defects, sidewalk, curb, signs, streetlights, and blocked sidewalks. While no recent press coverage was found, safety problems here have been documented in the press for at least 10 years, with the earliest coverage we can find dating to 2016.
An automated visual audit flagged a vehicle turning conflict zone, corroborated by city records showing 6 pedestrian crossing collisions in five years. City records also show 33 street-condition 311 reports in 12 months and 6 pedestrian crossing collisions in 5 years related to faded crosswalks, though the visual audit did not find this. City records indicate 14 street-condition 311 reports in 12 months for inadequate street lighting and 71 street-condition 311 reports in 12 months for poor curb/sidewalk condition; neither was observed in the visual audit photograph.
I respectfully request your support for funding Continental crosswalks, corner daylighting, and a leading pedestrian interval. An estimated $250,000 to $350,000, order of magnitude, could be secured via the Caltrans Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
A resident of District 6
