Dear Supervisor Sauter,
I am writing to you as a concerned resident of District 3 regarding the critical safety issues at the intersection of Broadway and Columbus.
City records show 48 injury collisions within 150 meters of this intersection in the last five years, including one fatality. This figure covers a 150-meter radius, while the Danger Index grade is computed over a tighter 80-meter core, so these two figures are measured over different areas and a reader should not expect them to reconcile. The intersection shows more reported harm than 97 percent of San Francisco intersections, earning an F grade on the Danger Index. No exposure normalization: the index ranks reported harm, not risk per crossing.
In the last three years, there have been 940 street-condition 311 reports at this location, counting street defects, sidewalk and curb, signs, streetlights, and blocked sidewalks only. While no recent press coverage was found, press coverage of safety problems at this intersection goes back at least 12 years, to 2014, which is the earliest coverage we can find.
An automated visual audit flagged faded or sub-standard crosswalk markings and a vehicle turning conflict zone. City records corroborate these observations, showing 311 reports: 15 in 12 months for crosswalks, and 4 pedestrian crossing collisions in 5 years related to both issues. Additionally, city records show 311 reports: 5 in 12 months relating to inadequate street lighting and 311 reports: 7 in 12 months relating to curb or sidewalk in poor condition.
I urge you to support funding for Continental crosswalks, corner daylighting, and a leading pedestrian interval at this intersection. An estimated $250,000 to $350,000 could be secured through the Caltrans Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) to implement these vital improvements.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
Sincerely,
A resident of District 3
