Dear Supervisor Sauter,
I am writing regarding pedestrian safety at Broadway and Romolo in District 3.
City records document 49 injury collisions within 150 meters of this intersection in the last five years, 1 of them fatal, while the Danger Index grade is computed over a tighter 80 metre core, so the two figures are measured over different areas and a reader should not expect them to reconcile. This intersection shows more reported harm than 98 percent of San Francisco intersections, which is grade F on the Danger Index; there is no exposure normalization, as the index ranks reported harm rather than risk per crossing.
City records document 962 street-condition 311 reports here across the last three years, counting street defects, sidewalk and curb, signs, streetlights, and blocked sidewalks only. Over the last 12 months, city records show 17 street-condition 311 reports and 6 pedestrian crossing collisions in 5 years relating to faded or sub-standard crosswalk markings, 6 street-condition 311 reports relating to inadequate street lighting, and 13 street-condition 311 reports relating to curb or sidewalk in poor condition, although the visual audit did not find these in the photograph.
Press coverage dates back at least 12 years to 2014, the earliest coverage we can find, alongside recent articles by Citizen and Maison Law. Please seek Caltrans Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funding, an order of magnitude of $250,000 to $350,000, for Continental crosswalks, corner daylighting, and a leading pedestrian interval.
Sincerely,
A resident of District 3
