Dear Supervisor Mandelman,
I am writing to you regarding safety concerns at the intersection of Church and Duboce.
City records show 13 injury collisions within 150 meters of this intersection in the last five years. This 150-meter radius differs from the 80-meter core used for the Danger Index, so the figures are not directly comparable. This intersection shows more reported harm than 87 percent of San Francisco intersections, earning a grade D on the Danger Index. Please note, this index ranks reported harm, not risk per crossing, as it lacks exposure normalization.
In the last three years, there have been 157 street-condition 311 reports at this location, covering street defects, sidewalk and curb, signs, streetlights, and blocked sidewalks. City records also show 311 reports: 4 in 12 months relating to faded or sub-standard crosswalk markings, though a visual audit did not find this in the photograph. Similarly, city records show 311 reports: 6 in 12 months relating to inadequate street lighting, which the visual audit also did not observe in the photograph.
I urge you to fund safety upgrades for this intersection, including Continental crosswalks, corner daylighting, and a leading pedestrian interval. An estimated $250,000 to $350,000, order of magnitude, could be secured through the Caltrans Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
Sincerely,
A resident of District 8
