Dear Supervisor Dorsey,
I am writing to you regarding the critical safety issues at the intersection of Gough and Haight Streets in District 6. City records document significant concerns at this location.
Within the last five years, 93 injury collisions were recorded by the city within 150 meters of this intersection. It is important to note this 150-meter radius differs from the tighter 80-meter core used for the Danger Index grade, so these figures are measured over different areas and should not be expected to reconcile. Furthermore, 319 street-condition 311 reports, covering street defects, sidewalk and curb issues, signs, streetlights, and blocked sidewalks, have been filed at this location in the last three years.
This intersection shows more reported harm than 99 percent of San Francisco intersections, earning it a grade F on the Danger Index. No exposure normalization: the index ranks reported harm, not risk per crossing. While no recent press coverage was found, documented press coverage of safety problems at this intersection goes back at least 12 years, to 2014, which is the earliest coverage we can find.
To address these documented hazards, I respectfully request your support in funding specific improvements. I urge you to advocate for Continental crosswalks, corner daylighting, and a leading pedestrian interval. The estimated cost for these improvements is in the order of $250,000 to $350,000, which could be sought through the Caltrans Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).
Thank you for your attention to this vital community safety matter.
Sincerely,
A resident of District 6
